Secrets of New Yorker Cartoonists
Come out and meet Lia Strasser (art) and Bizzy Coy (words), New Yorker cartoonists from Sullivan County, New York. They’ll share the unlikely story of their creative partnership, and how they collab effectively despite two different working styles and senses of humor. Plus, you’ll have a chance to test your comedy chops with an interactive game of Cartoon Caption Contest.
Bizzy Coy (Words) is a writer.
She writes short humor, cartoon captions, short fiction, personal storytelling, scripts and screenplays. Bizzy's first book is PERSONAL SPACE: Short humor from The New Yorker, McSweeney's and beyond. Her short humor writing appears in The New Yorker, McSweeney's, Vulture, Splitsider, The Belladonna, Points in Case, The Establishment. Her cartoons (in collaboration with artist Lia Strasser) appear in The New Yorker. Her short fiction has been published in Litt Magazine, Grand Journal and The Catskiller.
She received a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in Screenwriting, Fulbright Fellowship to Ireland, MacDowell Fellowship, DVAA Individual Artist Grant, Puffin Foundation Grant and the Catskill Center's Platte Clove Artist Residency. She has read her work aloud at events hosted by MacDowell, Deep Water Literary Fest, An Evening of Humorous Readings, WJFF Radio Catskill, Yarnslingers, Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, Wurtsboro Art Alliance, Dublin City University and more. She graduated with a BA in Theater from SUNY Geneseo and an MA in Creative Writing from Dublin City University. She is a freelance copywriter. She previously worked for digital agency Situation Interactive and Blue Man Group.

Lia Strasser is a fine artist, illustrator, and writer whose work appears in The New Yorker Magazine, Grand Journal, andDVEIGHT Magazine. She has been recognized by the Society of Publication Designers, has received an AI-AP Illustration and GEMA/Promax Awards, and multiple grants and residencies. Her current practice centers on creating videos consisting of multi-panel watercolors, spoken word, and music that bridges fine art and cinematic storytelling.
Strasser has exhibited in New York and internationally, with projects supported by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, One Grand Books, and Sullivan Public. She is passionate about creative instigation, believes expression is a fundamental human need, and rejects the myth of “talent,” advocating instead for mentorship and accessible expressive practices.
